Boring Facts

That picture really is me on a very, very, good hair day and... maybe a few years younger.

I enjoy life and want everyone else to - graduated from college in the 70s with a Chemical Engineering Degree and worked as an engineer to save money for Medical School. Engineering was interesting - I worked on a blood analyzer, water treatment, recycling and environmental engineering and construction. (Even got recognition for helping design a community resource recovery plant as a volunteer designer) It was great fun but medicine was my true calling.

Started in Medicine in 1983 and never looked back (now 37 years later, still at it). My biggest curiosity is why are people still getting sick? Doing the math backwards led me to some answers and now I focus on integrative and functional medicine with great results for my patients.

Got married late in life and was blessed with a WONDERFUL daughter. Wanted lots of kids but that didn't happen. So I had to settle on several cats, dogs, fish, mice and whatever else the kids brought home - I drew the line at pygmy goats and snakes. I want chickens but am too busy to look after them.

Moved to Harrisonburg in 1997 and worked for RMH from 1999 until 2008 when they streamlined our department during the recession. Since then I have had many jobs and balance work with family and caring for my very elderly parents (I literally dropped off the planet for a looong time and only recently re-entered a semi-normal life. Still look after my 93 (soon to be 94) year old mother).

I was an original Co-Owner/Creator of You Made It Pottery Studio (wrote the business plan, came up with the name (as a joke but it stuck) and financed 1/2 the startup) Sold my 1/2 because it was interfering with my marriage.

Am an Original Charter Member of the Food Coop

Help purchase "The Operation Game" for the Children's Museum

Donated a Large Screen TV for Mercy House

Worked on an anti-bullying campaign with RCMA

Volunteered and helped plan Fridays on the Square for 2 summers way back when (2003).

Had a wellness center and circuit gym (No Sweat Fitness - it was like a small version of Planet Fitness but ahead of its time) in my efforts to get people healthy (Offered nutrition, Yoga, Reiki in addition to the circuit workout) Sadly couch potatoes are hard to motivate off the couch so I reduced services to just mine after the lease ran out. Was recognized by the Presidents Council on Fitness for my efforts in promoting wellness.

I have a small integrative medicine & wellness practice and work 2 days a week at Bridging The Gaps drug and alcohol rehab center. Consulted for the Army Corps of Engineers, the Border Patrol, Lockheed Martin, the VA, NASA....zzzzzzz putting you to sleep yet? Cover lots of Urgent Cares across the state (Emergicare here was one - I gave that up last summer). I should be retired. But why stop?

A health blog (no one was reading it so I stopped writing) http://drkathleen.blogspot.com/

My gym blog http://nosweatfitnessexpress.blogspot.com/

And a 30 day wellness challenge video series I did (no it was not 30 days straight but 2 minutes a day for 30 days) – here are some links for your entertainment

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7P1x03fHoA (farmers market)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8JZv5OCG80 (food co-op)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-NNbRtUojw (Italian restaurant)

The elephant in the room - aka "all Drs are rich" - not!

I know people will talk, so I am just putting my financials out there in all their glory

Acknowledgements: Many thanks to Nancy Carrie Logan for help with social media, Jeff Mayfield, David Driver, James McHone, George Pace, Windshield City, Printing Express, SJ Hampe and others (who wish to remain nameless) for their encouragement to me in taking this on. Blessings to all.
